Photo-A-Day: The End

Well, that's it. June is over. This year is speeding along! It's currently 90 degrees in Seattle and we are all melting. July is not looking any cooler, but I'm ok with that. Once you accept the heat, it doesn't feel so bad. I had a lot of fun with this Photo-a-Day challenge and might do another one in August.

Recipe: Goat Cheese Crackers

homemade, crackers, gluten free, snacks, diy, goat cheese, seattle, recipe, baking

Ingredients:
½ cup corn flour
½ tsp salt
¼ tsp sage
4 oz. soft goat cheese
½  to 1 cup ice water
 cup olive oil

Directions:

Preheat your oven to 350ºF
1. Combine corn flour, salt and sage in a medium mixing bowl.

2. Add goat cheese. Use a fork to break it up.
homemade, crackers, gluten free, snacks, diy, goat cheese, seattle, recipe, baking

3. The next part is easier with your hands: as you mix in the goat cheese, sprinkle a couple teaspoons of ice water on the mix.

4. Now, drizzle some olive oil on everything. Alternate between ice water and oil till the dough stops falling apart when you try to press it flat.

5. Roll the dough into a ball and place to one side of a large piece of wax paper. Fold the other half of the wax paper over the ball of dough and gently press to flatten a bit.

6. Use a rolling pin to roll the dough out to a little more than a ¼ inch thick. (Your dough will have a few cracks around the edges, but if it cracks a lot or falls apart, put it back in the bowl and mix in a little more water or oil.)

7. Use a cookie cutter to cut your crackers. Line them neatly on a cookie sheet and use a fork to make divots in the centers.

8. Bake 15-20 minutes, or until the edges turn a nice golden brown.

Look of the Day: Overflowing Florals

Seattle, street style, look of the day, vintage, 90s, blonde, in style, denim, coach
As much as I love this look and the way it turned out, I can't help but do a lot of internal whining when I look at the pictures.  Long story short, this look was put together for a magazine (it may or may not get printed), which is exciting, but there were hitches and problems that made the whole process really frustrating. My camera was like "Oh you need these photos today? I don't really feel like focusing..." I think the pattern on the dress confused the auto-focus. Also, I accidently paid $12.99 for a Dress Barn dress. A used Dress Barn dress :( That'll teach me to look more closely at the tags when I'm at Value Village. See, the whining in my head is just as unpleasant when it's on paper.

In better thrift shopping news, I keep finding great deals on overall shorts. GAP used to have the monopoly on overall shorts, but now I do. If you would like to add a pair to your summer wardrobe, I am selling some for a reasonable price on Etsy. Actually, mine really are the most reasonably priced. I saw a pair of  Levi's overalls and the asking price was, get this, $150!! I can barely even imagine selling a vintage Coach bag for that much.

Don't stare at these blurry florals for too long. You'll stress your eyes.

That is all.

Photo-A-Day: Week 2

Look of the Day: Classic Levi's

neon pink, levi's, silk, vintage dior, vintage, banana republic, blonde pixie cut, in style, spring 2013
Let's be honest. I'm wearing mom jeans and... I love them. I found them yesterday at Value Village and I think the trick is the petite sizing. That just means they fit better on my short legs. People can say what they want about tapered jeans and high waists. My ass looks great! And can I get an amen for the stomach flattening miracle that is high waisted denim?? Plus, the tapered jean was just the precursor to the skinny jean. So there.

Something tells me you are probably a little like me: you haven't tried on real denim in a while and you don't even realize it. Everything is adulterated with stretchy this and Lycra that. It fits sooo differently when it's just pure, 100% cotton. There's a certain confidence that comes from wearing something as indestructible as a classic pair of Levi's. It's such a forgiving fabric in more ways than one. I can wear a lighter wash without my legs looking like denim sausages, because the fabric isn't clinging to every dimple, and I won't worry if they get a little dirty out the garden. They were, after all, invented for the indestructible settlers of the Wild West.

So run, don't walk, to your nearest thrift shop and treat yo self to some vintage Levi's! Your butt will thank you for it.

Recipe: Spinach-Pear Smoothie

recipe, superfood, spinach, smoothie, drink, diy, healthy, vegetarian, pear, fiber
How much fiber are you getting everyday? FYI, women need 25 grams and men need a whopping 38 grams! I know my husband and I haven't been getting enough, so I've been trying to sneak in a little extra into every meal. I bought a fiber supplement and have been making more beans, which are ridiculously high in fiber. I get bored of beans, though, and tired of cooking, so we have smoothies a couple nights a week. They're a great way to get your veggies and fruit and they're fun to make!

This smoothie has some awesome superfoods in it and contains almost 9 grams of fiber. Drink up!

recipe, superfood, spinach, smoothie, drink, diy, healthy, vegetarian, pear, fiber

Ingredients:
½ cup milk or juice
1 Tbsp lemon juice
1 cup spinach leaves
2 tsp fiber powder
1 small pear, chopped
¼ cup blueberries
¼ cup pineapple pieces
1 tsp chia seeds
½ scoop protein powder (optional)

recipe, superfood, spinach, smoothie, drink, diy, healthy, vegetarian, pear, fiber

Directions:
1. In a blender, combine the milk/juice, lemon juice and spinach leaves. Blend till smooth.
2. Add fiber powder and blend
3. Add fruit, one portion at a time.
4. Throw in the remaining ingredients and blend it all up. Pour over ice and enjoy!

Look of the Day: Denim Overall Shorts!

summer style, shorts, denim, GAP, in style, fashion, blonde, fleur d'elise, trendy, vintage
A couple weeks ago, I went to find some denim overall shorts and found nothing but horrible teal corduroy overalls with Tweetie Bird stitched into the front pockets. Maybe that is some next-level vintage fashion, but I am just not there yet. Luckily, this past weekend I stumbled upon not one, but 5 pairs of great overall shorts, all in my size! I had my pick of color and fit. They were all affordable, too! On top of two pairs of overall shorts, including these stripey ones seen before you, I found 3 pairs of great, high waisted shorts. I might list one or two pairs on Etsy, but for now I'm just enjoying changing from one pair to another throughout the day.

Gotta love living in the city. I wouldn't mind the graffiti so much if I wasn't the one who had to have it painted over. The city will send you a letter if you don't.

I've been really into painting fabric lately. I made some tea towels for Mother's Day presents. I even half-assed hemmed them! This shirt was about to be donated when I decided I might like it better if I painted it. Turns out I do like it better!
