The Tiniest Party Animals

rhino, glitter, coral, pastels, tassels

I've been busy, busy, busy! I feel like the blog has taken a back seat, but Etsy is going so well I can barely keep up! Last month, I made all of these little ornaments and have finally gotten around to listing them all on Etsy.

They're painted by hand, then they're decked out with tissue paper tassels I cut and roll by hand. Baker's twine makes them perfect for hanging in the tree to topping a gift.

This little giraffe was the first ornament I sold on Etsy. It went to someone very fancy (I can't say who).

The silver bear is one of my favorites, and the dino to the right comes as part of a 4 piece set!

You can also order an animal menagerie! If you're dying for a giraffe or elephant, just message me and I'll make it happen!

DIY: Fun with Envelopes

coral, yellow, paper source, hand lettering, fun fonts, gel pen, polka dot, glitter
Enough with the boring envelopes. As someone who loves envelopes, possibly even more than cards, I think it's high time we start making our mail as beautiful on the outside as it is on the inside. Oh, also, you need to start sending more mail. Your grandma would appreciate it.

Besides envelopes and a reason to write, you'll need to gather a few fun tools & decorative bits.

Suggested Bits:

Now, what should we do with all this stuff? Pile it all on? Sure, I guess. If you really like that sort of look... I'm not sure the post office will appreciate the mess, though.

Instead, here are some ideas to try! (In order of trickiness)

1. Fun with pens & shapes

You'll need: Envelopes, washi tape, gel pens, & a paper punch.

I love this flag punch. I use it for a lot of things; tiny banners, cards, gift tags, etc. Turns out it also makes super cute address labels. You can either trace it or glue it on. If you glue it, make sure you get all the edges so it doesn't peel off in the post. On dark envelopes, metallic, white, and any opaque gel pen make addresses easier to read. Neon pens are fun and so are these Souffle Puffy Pens. They're similar to heat embossing, except require no heat or messing embossing powder.

2. Circles Labels

You'll need: Circle stickers, a pencil & a pen

This involves a little more handlettering. That may sound daunting, but handlettering is really just all about practice. A pencil helps immensely, as does a good eraser. For this font, I curved it to sort of fit into the top of the circle. To give it a distinct look, I made all the letters narrow with a low center of gravity. Another fun way to use the circle labels is to cut them in half and use one half for the destination and the other for the return address.

3. Filling up big envelopes (or small ones)

You'll need: A pencil, a good eraser & a Faber Castell Brush Pen

Do not, I repeat, do not buy a calligraphy pen. They always make your handwriting ugly. Maybe I just don't understand how they work or haven't practiced enough, but whatever. The trick is the brush pen! The nib is soft, like a paint brush. Duh. It's also much finer at the tip which means finer lines. We use them all the time at Paper Source for the handlettering classes we teach. We do not even bother with all those calligraphy pens we carry.

Anyway, pencil, brush pen, and a bit of instruction are all you need. Here is a video. Watch at least the first two minutes.

Done? Ok. Notice how on the down stroke the lines are thicker? That's because he's pressing harder. On the upstroke, there is very little pressure. That's how you get that style. Pretty simple, huh? You can use those rules to write in cursive or print! Also notice that his stuff is not perfect. It is OKAY to not be "perfect". Now go practice, and use the pencil to sketch things out beforehand. When you feel confident in your handlettering you can use it to write big, loopy, ridiculous addresses on your envelopes. But don't show it to your engaged friends. They will ask that you address all 200 of their wedding invites. As a favor.

4. Time to get crazy

coral, yellow, paper source, hand lettering, fun fonts, gel pen, polka dot, glitter

Right now you're probably going "But Catie, I don't have any of these crazy-colorful envelopes you have because I live in Hawaii & we don't have a Paper Source here." Ugh, your life is so hard, is what I would say. Then you say "All I have is this boring white envelope that came with the Hallmark card I bought." Snoozeville! Gawd, they will probably just throw it out with the Amex bill.

Let's put this cattiness behind us. I have an idea.

Here's what you'll need: Stamps, ink, glitter & confetti, brush pen, & a fun label. I like these labels from the Flourish Collection. They're based in Seattle. Stamps are also a great way to add color and pattern to an otherwise plain envelope. I used a simple circle stamp. For smaller polka dots, use a pencil eraser!

Now, let's put those handlettering skills to work! This time I wrote really fast, so the letters are a little lopsided and messy. This is the style I wanted. Imperfections always make things a little more fun.

Did you know? If you run out of space on the front of an envelope, you can put the return address on the back. Super high-class, right?

For the final touch, I slipped the everything into a cellophane envelope & added confetti! I used the cello envelope that fits a 4bar (tiny) card, but they come in a variety of sizes, all available through Clearbags. This has been my favorite way to send mail all year. An important note, though. Make sure you affix the stamp to the outside of the clear envelope. If the post office can't cancel the stamp, because, say, it's covered in shiny plastic, they may send it back to you!

Well, this has been fun! Now to send all of these off to my imaginary friends. If you have real friends you'd like to send some love to, I'm giving away a snail mail fun pack!

Geode Birthday Invitations

Working at Paper Source is really starting to get to me. The other night I came home and decided to make some invites for my birthday party. These came out.

gold, coral, envelope, invitation, gems, crystals, dinosaur, splatter paint
Honestly, I had a bit of inspiration, but they turned out even better than I'd imagined. I'm really proud of them and had so much fun assembling all the pieces.

I decided to go with 3 different Paper Source colors and black. The invite itself is printed on Rhubarb, which is being discontinued. It's on clearance on the Paper Source website! The other colors are Coral & Lake, and I subbed Fig envelopes (not shown) for Rhubarb, since they aren't available anymore.

When you're creating an invitation suite, accents are where it really starts to get fun. They can be as intricate or as simple as you like. The border is done with a gold paint pen. For the sashes, I found a crystal pattern on Google images. That was a little trickier, because I had to mess around with the size so it wouldn't print all blurry.

I made gold-spotted black seals to finish off the envelopes. If you'd like your own set of custom seals, you can order them through my Etsy shop.

Things: Current Favorites

Who know's what my favorite things will be next week, but here are my current obsessions:

I've just discovered JCPenney's shoe department. I'm impressed by both the selection and the ridiculously-low sale prices. These sandals are $13.99 right now! They're crazy comfortable, too.

Probably my biggest skin care splurge to date, but I've decided my beauty mantra is "Face and feet". I want to take good care of both, so while I have the money, I'm gonna do just that! Argan oil is kind of a miracle serum. It's soothed my itchy, irritated skin (too much make-up? Laundry detergent? Who knows). I use a drop on dry hair to enhance shine and tame flyaways, and it's also healed my split cuticles. Nuff said.

This lipstick is almost neon in real life. It looks much more sensible in the picture. I love it either way.

From The Confectionery in University Village. Just slightly fruity, soft, but not super gummy like a gum drop. They're quite pleasant. I had them at my wedding reception and they're one of the few things I paid full price for.

I bought this necklace off Chictopia a couple months ago. I wasn't sure how to style it at first, mostly because I find jewelry to be overwhelming. Now I've decided to just wear it with everything. Why not, right? It's a total conversation starter.

fluoresce

So, I am not suppose to be wearing heels, but right now my foot feels better in heels than in my 5 oz. running shoes. Why?? I don't know what is going on with it. It was getting better, but has gotten exponentially worse over the past couple weeks. Humph.

It is currently 61°F here and sooo bright. I think I will hobble outside and sit somewhere. Then I will watch the joggers go past, and for once in my life, wish I could jog.

My mom half-gave-half-relinquished these amazing lace pants to me. I can't actually where them anywhere yet, because there is a hole in the seat, but they still work for pictures. They are completely see-through, so it's not like the hole is that much more indecent, it just looks bad. Anyone know how to repair lace?

Coral & Orchid

It's almost Spring, which means it's time for something new.

Time for some personal envelope pushing and more colors in my wardrobe! I found these tights, which are the exact shade of purple I hate the most, but thanks to these tights, I now love it!

During this photo session the lighting changed dramatically and I was able to get some really neat shots. They're so graphic.

Time

Garnet, coral, and sterling silver. Hanging on a Vileroy & Boch herb pot.

I wish I had more time for art, but earrings are better than nothing! I've made two pairs in the past couple weeks and also repaired some things for a friend. I have plans to start on Christmas gifts. We'll see if anything actually happens, haha.

Fancy fancy

I made a new pair of earrings. I half way constructed them some months ago, but then got a "Jeweler's block". They finally came together last weekend and I must say I am totally in love with them. Materials used: Gold-fill chain and findings, coral and Lapis Lazuli beads.

Earrings

I'm a fidgety person. Always have been. I rarely watch TV, but when I do, I need something to keep me occupied, otherwise I just get up and leave. This is even true when America's Next Top Model is on (I've been watching the re-runs). Last night, I had already finished my dinner by the time it was on, so I decided to make my friend Ashley a pair of earrings. I made her a pair for Christmas a couple years ago and she has been asking for more. I made two pairs for her to choose from.

The first pair is made from Sterling silver, dyed coral, and glass beads.

The second is shell and Sterling.
