Party: Mathilde's 4th Birthday

Four seems to be the age when birthdays really start clicking for kids. They understand what's going on a little better and they get excited and less overwhelmed. This year, Mathilde asked for a French birthday, but we think she meant she wanted everyone to speak in French. Or something. She didn't seem too disappointed when no one spoke in French, save a few words. I helped with the decorations and baking. My mom & sisters did a ton of cooking.

The party turned out more balloon themed. She had about a dozen regular balloons and then we accidentally over-bought Mylar balloons (it's hard to resist when you're at the $ store). She ended up with 10 of those.

DIY Idea: Making pretty banners for cakes and table decorations is relatively easy. Use a pencil and just keep sketching until you get the shape you want. Also use the pencil when writing so you can go back and correct any letters you don't like. Then trace over the letters with a nice pen.

I found this awesome matte, neon wrapping paper in the Target After-Christmas sale. I kinda wish I'd bought two rolls.

DIY Idea: Save the little cello envelopes that cards and stickers come in and reuse them to add another dimension to gifts. They turn the card into the centerpiece of the gift, or use a tiny one for the tag. The addition of glitter makes them even more festive.

Emmett, terrified, and Tilly in two of her birthday presents.

My sister Maddie made Tilly a chocolate & vanilla cake with strawberry frosting. She made a strawberry sauce and then mixed it with cream cheese and powdered sugar. It was completely delicious.

Aside from a few nonsensical outbursts of "I hate my birthday!" when she was frustrated with her zipper,Tilly was the sweetest birthday girl. She thanked each person that gave her a gift or a card and at the end of the night said "Thank you everyone!"

Look of the Day: Polka Dot Party

I want to host another tea party! A garden party would be the perfect thing. If the patio behind my apartment was a little bigger and a little more private, I would host it there. I've been working on tidying it up. I've planted more poppies, some succulents, nasturtiums, and a big, yellow daisy-type flower. As you can see, though, my weedwacker can't keep up with the warm weather. The grass is out of control!

Thanks to Oasap  for the blouse, the sunglasses, and the outfit inspiration. All of which led to the tea party inspiration, of course.

I just love the shape of these!

...And lets all wish Frida a very Happy 10th Birthday!

I can't believe she's 10! It happens to be her Golden Birthday, so I am going to try to do something special. Unfortunately, her back has been bothering her and we think she had a stroke (it's the best diagnoses for her droopy face), so it's going to be a quiet birthday. Maybe I will cook her a steak and we can watch a movie... Ok, I'll watch the movie.

It's nice being able to take Frida up on the roof so she can run around. It's new for her, so she mostly just sits close to me and watches people make their way up and down our street. Her little ears flip back to the sides of her head, her corgi tail starts to wiggle, and I can tell she's really hoping they all come to say hi.

Frida the Mini Corgi

Okay, so she's not really a mini corgi, but she's the closest thing to it! She's half corgi, half chihuahua. She has the short legs, a cropped tail and huge ears, just like a corgi, though! The only chihuahua traits she got were the buggy eyes, which have been making me laugh for almost 10 years.

She was really excited to be outside, off a leash, and spent most of the time scampering around trying to figure out how to get off the roof. I had a hard time getting a photo that wasn't blurred by motion.

I had quite a spate of thrifting luck last month. One of my amazing finds was this vintage Burberry trench coat that fits like a glove. I'm usually swimming in vintage coats, but I knew it was Thrifting Destiny the minute I laid eyes on it. It even has slightly shorter sleeves, which I prefer in a coat. My husband makes fun of me, but honestly, a cropped sleeve is so much more flattering!

The coat is missing the liner, but that just means I'll reserve it for the milder seasons.

As you may know, pattern mixing is "in" and, well, it just makes for fun outfits. A good point to remember is "When in doubt, color coordinate!" This can make any outfit look more pulled together.

Frida is known for her bewildered/worried expressions.

In Photos: Fourth of July

Hope all of my American readers had a lovely holiday. Here's a recap of my day.
My dog was freaked out all day.

I can't even begin to tell you how much fruit I have consumed this summer.

 Pool toys

Grilled fruit always sounds like a good idea, and it looks pretty, but really it just gets mushy.

My mom's homemade hot dog buns and Sweet-Hot Relish from Martha Stewart.

Summer Fruit Pie. Recipe coming soon :)
