Lately: Autumn 2016

I hate to start a blog post by talking about the weather, but it affects my posting so much, I can't help it! This October has been the rainiest on record. Boo.

This time last year, I had 4 posts published in October, and was ramping up on Etsy for the holiday season. I noticed the other day that my product views were way down, mainly because I hadn't listed anything new on Etsy. That's when I realized I hadn't gone out to take photos with a real camera (not just my phone) in weeks, resulting in zero new listings and zero blog posts! I'm hoping November is a little drier (or a little snowier?!) so I can take some actual outfit photos!

My favorite accessory right now: the handkerchief.

My newest card features a hand-carved tiger moth stamp. I think I'll carve a whole series.

Taken on a day that was dry enough to bring my camera out.

This is Otto's nervous look. He hates the car.

Look of the Day: Mini Shirt Dress, Tassel Earrings, & Some Thrifty Tips

Fun Fact: Everything I'm wearing, with the exception of one bracelet, was thrifted! The whole look cost not more than $55. I would say "What's the point of going to the mall?" But let's be honest, if it weren't for our society's consumption habits, we wouldn't have thrift stores and garage sales so chock full of awesome stuff.

Okay, I think it's high-time I share some of my thrifting advice.

First and foremost, thrifting takes patience & experience! I've been doing this for years and seem to have endless amounts of focus when it comes to shopping. I went garage saleing with my dad as a kid and I have really good eyesight, which helps me pick out things like real leather among a sea of plastic.  My hope is that this post will help you work with your predispositions; be they genetic or otherwise.

#1: Plan Ahead
If you don't have the patience or are short on time, go in with a game plan so you don't get overwhelmed. Need summer dresses? Then head straight for the dress section! Not sure what you're looking for? Choose 2 sections to start with and branch out when you feel comfortable. If you're like me and get overwhelmed in big stores, keep your head down and focus on just the stuff directly in front of you.

#2: Get to know quality
Do some research and familiarize yourself with good brands, good fabrics, and countries of origin that are known for higher quality construction.

Examples:
Classics like L.L. Bean & vintage Levi's, vintage Salvatore Ferragamo & Coach, or mid-range brands that just hold up well, like Gap, Old Navy, & J. Crew. Coach knock-offs from the 90s are still a good buy, because they're usually good leather.

As for materials, leather (duh), silk, linen, & wool are all good bets. Wool, especially, as it has anti-microbial properties meaning it shouldn't stink no matter how many times its former owner wore it skiing.

Countries of Origin to look for:
Japan
USA & Canada
England, Scotland, etc.
France, Spain or Italy
Anything in Scandinavia

This is not to say high quality can't be made in other countries, but these countries aren't big garment manufacturers anymore, so the item is either old or a really good newer piece that was probably very expensive.

#3 Look in Unexpected Places
When you're feeling more confident or just aren't finding things in your size, don't just leave! Check out the places no one else has thought to look! I'm petite, so I always check the XL section of the Boy's Clothes. Quite frequently, amazing things are mistaken for boys clothes and put here. I've found a cashmere Burberry sweater, a pair of jeans made in Ballard, just 10 minutes from my apartment, and some vintage pieces that have since become all-time favorites.

If you're tall, try the men's section. High quality women's jeans are frequently mistaken for men's jeans, and it's a great place to find nice sweaters.

Stunning vintage maxi dresses are always put in the XXL section of women's dresses because they usually involve much more fabric than maxi dresses of today. This means, that even if they are a little bit big, the good construction and drape of the fabric will be flattering on you anyway. Vintage sizing is also very different from modern day sizes, so don't assume something will or won't fit!

#4 If you love it, buy it
No matter where it's made, what it's made from, or whether it's in style or not. If you feel good in it, buy it! Things in thrifts stores should be considered one of a kind, even if they're from a mass producer like Gap or Target. It's probably a good deal and who knows when you'll find another in your size! Like I said, I've been doing this for years, and I rarely find 2 of something in the same size.

Think of it as a treasure hunt. Don't forget to have fun!
Email me if you have any more questions about thrifting!

P.S. The dress is for sale in Shop Fleur Elise.

Look of the Day: Gold & White

I looooovvve Spring! Life is just filled with blooms. And isn't this bouquet the most beautiful you've ever seen? I walk into my kitchen just to stare at it. With my husband gone, I have a little extra room in the grocery budget, so they've been a weekly treat. I'm having an affair with Trader Joe's.

Look of the Day: Moss & Cashmere

I want to apologize in advance for how badly these photos might look on your own computer. The lighting in my neighborhood is atrocious this time of year, and my computer's colors seem to be off. I finally (finally) got a new computer to replace my sad, old laptop, but I think it needs to have it's colors calibrated or whatever. Stuff that looks fine to me, looks really weird on any other screen. Feedback would be appreciated! Do they look hecka yellow?

Enough tech talk. I'd been lusting after these moss green pants at Anthroplogie for a few months, and happened to find my size in the after-Christmas sales. Thank goodness Anthropologie always carries a million of each thing.

I'm so glad green is back "in style". It's always been one of my favorite colors, and now stores are finally carrying it again! Green accessories have been on Spring wishlists in years past, but it's been nearly impossible to actually find the color. Filling up my closet and my jewelry box as we speak! The malachite pendant is vintage, but you can still get the faux malachite cuff from Madewell.

Look of the Day: Green & More Glasses

fall fashion, oasap, old navy, blonde, pixie cut, timex, fleur d'elise

Heeey guyz. This week has been rough. Well, last week, too. I'm having a pretty hard time (health-wise), and I'm still not sure if it's something serious. Probably not, but, little fact, I'm a huuuuge hypochondriac, which is why I'm having such a hard time. I've been trying to distract myself with work and blogging, especially since I've been neglecting the outfit posts. So here's the second one of the week! It's that Oasap blouse again. I just love it! The green sweater is also care of Oasap, but I'm not crazy about the fit. Seams that hit at the mid arm are never flattering on me. I keep hoping, though! On the plus side, the sweater is really soft and a fabulous color!

That's all for now.

Hope you're all doing well xxxx

Look of the Day: Kimono & Sheinside Jumpsuit

jewel tones, fall fashion, kimono, outfit ideas, look of the day, fleur d'elise,
Sheinside sent me this awesome jumpsuit months ago, right in the middle of our summer heat. The last thing I wanted to do was put on pants, so I put the jumpsuit in my closet and promptly forgot about it. Luckily, the Sheinside team was very patient with me and just sent me an email last week asking if I'd gotten it. I feel awful for forgetting, but better late than never! The style is a little more Autumn-y, anyway.

I love the color and the fabric, but it fits really small and the measurements for this one weren't available when I ordered it. Thankfully, you can't tell just how tight certain areas are, haha. One thing that fits perfectly is the bodice and the straps. As a petite person, it's nearly impossible to find anything with slim straps that aren't miles long. Really, I think this is the first spaghetti strap thing I've actually been able to wear! They're out of this exact jumpsuit, but they are carrying this burgundy jumpsuit, that is pretty much the same thing. This navy version is also really cute!

Look of the Day: Pants Season

in style, patterned pants, fall fashion, pixie cut, red lipstick, look of the day, seattle street style

The weather has cooled down a bit, so it’s time to break out the crazy pants. I always seem to wear them around this time of year. I think it’s probably because in the Spring I’m sick of pants and excited about wearing skirts and shorts. Now, the tables have turned, and it’s pants I’m excited about!

What are you excited to wear this Fall?

Look of the Day: City Slicker

I am happy to say that the only thing in this outfit that I bought brand new is the flower pin. I've gotten some good use out of it, too!
Everything else is vintage, or at least thrifted. The sunglasses were found at a rare English yard sale on the way back from Bournemouth. They usually have huge boot sales out in fields, where everyone parks their cars and sell things out of their trunks (i.e. car boot), but this one was in someone's actual yard. These sunglasses were my favorite for quite sometime, but the lenses started falling out, so I retired them from regular use. Aviators seemed like the perfect style for this outfit, though.

After I had put the outfit all together, I realized that I looked like some city girl trying to fit in on the ranch. I’ve got the right combination or leather, denim, and gingham, but the accessories say something different. Heels in the barnyard? Ridiculous!

This is a charm bracelet I've been working on for a while. It has a lot of vintage charms and ones found at garage sales; charms I bought in Scotland and at Stonehenge; one from my friend Tiana and a multitude from my dad. I'm pretty sure the Texas charm is a garage sale find. It's one of my favorites.

Friday Fashion Fact
Like the word "calico", the name for gingham was brought over from East Asia by English and Dutch traders. Read more about it here.
